Pandas Are Coming Home to Atlanta

Big news for animal lovers! China has agreed to send giant pandas to Zoo Atlanta again. These are the famous bears with black-and-white fur that everyone loves to watch munch on bamboo.

Zoo Atlanta used to have pandas for many years. The last ones went back to China not long ago, so the zoo felt a little empty without them. Now new panda friends are on the way!

Why Does China Send Pandas?

Giant pandas come from China, and almost all pandas in zoos around the world are on loan from China. This is sometimes called 'panda diplomacy.' That means China shares pandas as a sign of friendship between countries.

The pandas usually stay for a number of years, and any cubs born at the zoo also belong to China. It's a bit like borrowing a very special, very fuzzy guest.

Meet the Bamboo Champions

Giant pandas may look big and sleepy, but they have a huge appetite. They spend up to 12 hours a day eating bamboo. That's like eating from breakfast all the way past dinner!

A grown panda can weigh around 100 kilograms. That's heavier than most grown-ups. But baby pandas are tiny when they are born — about the size of a stick of butter!

Helping Pandas Survive

Giant pandas were once in danger of disappearing forever. There are only around 1,800 of them living in the wild today, all in the mountains of China.

Zoos and scientists work together to study pandas and help more cubs be born safely. Thanks to lots of careful work, panda numbers have been slowly going up. That is wonderful news for these gentle bears.

Get Ready to Visit

When the pandas arrive, the zoo will give them time to settle in and feel at home. Then families will be able to come and watch them roll, climb, and chomp on bamboo.

It's a great reminder that countries can work together to protect animals. Soon, kids in Atlanta will get to make happy memories with their new panda neighbors.
